I.S. Gassins & Co manufactured fire hydrants during the 1800s. The fire hydrant in this picture is from the mid 1800s. Because of the 150 years worth of paint on this fire hydrant, it is very hard to see the detail, but this type of fire hydrant had beautiful detail work and was very ornamental in appearance. The top portion of this fire hydrant is actually constructed from bronze, but it has long since been painted over. Although this fire hydrant is in still considered to be in service in south western Virginia, it is very unlikely that it would operate, the fire hydrant appears to have been painted shut many years ago.
